about the guide

The Governance Good Practice Guide (GGPG) offers practical support and advice to everybody concerned with the governance of further education and training.

This guide, sponsored by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), is delivered through the Centre for Excellence in Leadership's (CEL) Leadership Skills for Governance (LSG) programme.

It is designed to help users of the FE system to enhance the quality of governance in their organisation through sound leadership and performance. This applies to clerks to corporations, governors and principals, FE managers, staff and learners within the college, Learning and Skills Council (LSC) staff and stakeholders in the wider community.

As part of its development activities, the Leadership Skills for Governance (LSG) team has been working with the FE sector to create consistent, accessible and sustainable information and advice on governance issues.

These discussions, with output from the LSG regional and in-house workshops, have identified a need to draw together information, practical advice, case studies and examples of good practice and make them available to as wide an audience as possible.

Effective governance is the foundation for successful self-regulation in the FE system and should be a core principle of business performance. Well performing governing boards do make a difference.

The Guide looks at key themes of governance, with links to further information and debate about governance and good practice within FE and elsewhere.

developing the guide

The aim is to produce materials incrementally and to subject them to ongoing consultation, review and update a 'multi-track' approach to development that will:

  • facilitate sharing of emerging national and regional developments with the sector, at a time of rapid change
  • ensure that the Guide's contents are informed by practitioners
  • support national, regional and local collaboration
  • promote the Guide's sustainability.

The first phase establishes the Guide's overall shape providing information on the FE system and developments and highlighting the first two key themes, governance role and responsibilities and self-assessment.
