self-regulation (2007)

In a speech to the 2006 AoC annual conference, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills issued a challenge to the FE sector to take collective responsibility for its own destiny and reputation, and forge a new relationship with governance based on self-regulation.

Under the chairmanship of Sir George Sweeney, the self-regulation group has been working to develop a framework around the following key areas:

• enhancing the sector's capacity for self-improvement
  
• improving the FE sector's responsiveness to the needs of learners and employers
  
• simplifying the regulatory landscape
  
• providing governors and leaders of colleges with greater autonomy in the running and governance of their organisations.

The self-regulation implementation group has a comprehensive website containing information about its proposals and developments.
