modes of governanceAs well as looking at the models of governance and its processes and procedures, and the roles and responsibilities of governing boards, other questions should be asked too: - What sort of board it is?
- What mode it is operating in?
- Is the board behaving in the right way at the right time?
There are five basic modes in which high performing boards operate. While good boards use all of these modes, excellent boards know which they are using, when and why.
There are times when several modes will apply. Knowing which mode(s) are appropriate and when, enables boards to govern with confidence. The risks boards face are when they need to be making strategy when they are, in fact, offering support; or when they are so busy husbanding the resource of the college that they don't offer that vital sense of stretch. | - Thinking back over the past few months, have you been aware of your governing board operating in different modes? If yes, what have they been?
- How do you know which mode(s) to use?
- Have the different modes of operation always been appropriate?
- Do you need to strengthen your governing board's ability to recognise the most appropriate mode(s) to use?
- Could you make use of modes of governance to improve your governing board's effectiveness?
