Self-Assessment: case study 1

From grade four to grade two in two years! If what you are doing isn't working, do something different!

This is an example of how, following a poor inspection in November 2003, a general further education college undertook a recovery programme leading to a successful re-inspection in November 2005. The example looks at the issues facing the college and the role played by the governing board in addressing the issues through effective self-assessment.

The example shows clear cause and effect, demonstrates leadership, shows the value of robust self-assessment, and the use of a different model of governance to bring about change and shift the focus to strategy, quality and the learner experience. The journey describes going from 'poor' to 'good', but the journey is not over – the next step is to move from 'good' to 'outstanding'!
