There are occasions when the function of the board is to 'support', not just encourage the senior management team.

The board will strive to maintain team effectiveness by ensuring that the infrastructure of the college works satisfactorily, and that members of staff are deployed efficiently within an appropriate system, enabling them to do their work properly and happily.

Areas that the board in this mode may want to explore are whether:

  • the right resources are available to ...
  • a particular issue seems unfair and what can be done to put it right
  • the board itself can ensure that staff are able to ...
  • it can contribute to developing and maintaining effective relationships with outside agencies/employers/partners/funding bodies, and how it would do it
  • it can help to enhance the profile and standing of the college in the local community and beyond, and how it should go about it
  • it fully understands the issues facing the college and management.
