There are times when the board needs to stretch the organisation by challenging and improving what is put to it.

These are the sort of questions that boards in stretch mode are faced with:

  • Can a strategic alliance for this be created?
  • Is there a way to do this differently?
  • Looking outwards across the FE system and studying in-house trends, how can improvements be made?
  • Why isn't the organisation maximising this ...?
  • How actively is the board involved in setting targets for the college?
  • How realistic and challenging are the targets for student retention, achievement and success rates? Do these targets aim to drive up the quality of provision for learners?
  • What are the college's priorities for improvement as identified in their quality improvement plan? Why have these been identified as priorities?
